The Debt Support Unit was founded in 1987. We ran Sheffield Debtline providing telephone advice direct to the public, and supported advisers to develop their skills in debt counselling.  Whilst the Debtline is no more, it has been replaced by direct provision of debt advice through our projects, and telephone and training support for debt advisers.

We now manage a variety of debt related projects, funded by Sheffield City Council, the Money Advice Service, The Royal British Legion and the Big Lottery amongst others.

We focus primarily on giving specialist debt advice to other agencies and, where members of the local community have been referred to us by these agencies, directly to the local community.

In 2008, we merged with Advice Centre Support in Sheffield (ACSIS), and took over from them as the main provider of specialist training for the advice sector in Sheffield. The advice network functions of ACSIS are now handled by Community Legal Advice Sheffield (CLASSY) of which we are a member.  Our training department - known as 'Advice Support Training' provides the full range of basic and specialist training courses to advisers across the full range of social welfare law.
